Prior to his ambassadorship, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d'Affaires in Cairo during Egypt's post-Arab Spring transition, Political Minister-Counselor in Baghdad, and Counselor for Political Affairs in Tel Aviv — making him one of the State Department's foremost regional hands.
